Ann Waltner is professor of history and director of the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota. From 2000-2005 she was the editor of the Journal of Asian Studies. She has published widely in the field of late Ming religion, gender and kinship. She has participated in designing and performing in a production with “Sacabuche!”, a group of early musicians, entitled “Matteo Ricci: His Map and Music.” She has a co-authored book (with Mary Jo Maynes) entitled “Family History and World History”, which Oxford University Press will publish in the spring of 2012.

Introduction

The James Ford Bell Library at the University of Minnesota has recently acquired a copy of the 1602 map of the world by Matteo Ricci. Ann Waltner will discuss the map and its production, calling attention to some particular characteristics of this exemplar of the map. The talk will be accompanied by visual representations of the map.
