Vivian Lee (李佩然)
Vivian Lee (李佩然) teaches Chinese cinema and modern Chinese literature at the City University of Hong Kong. Her work has been published in academic journals and anthologies including Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Journal of Chinese Cinemas, and Chinese Films in Focus 2 (British Film Institute, 2008). Her book Hong Kong Cinema since 1997: The Post-Nostalgic Imagination was published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2009.
Introduction
Macao has been featured in a number of Hong Kong films ranging from art house drama to popular action movies. Other than providing an ‘exotic’ setting of casinos and colonial architecture, in some recent films the city’s past and present are thematically integrated into Hong Kong’s post-colonial self-reflections. A more complex vision of Macao in Hong Kong’s cinematic imagination also sheds light on the on-going cultural dialogue between the two cities after the end of colonial rule. The presentation will discuss the changing images of Macao in Hong Kong cinema with an emphasis on developments after 1997.
