On November 22-23, the Macau Ricci Institute (MRI) is holding its annual symposium under the theme “Exploring The Silk Road Economic Belt and The 21st- Century Maritime Silk Road: The Challenge of Cross- Cultural Exchange and Communication.” The event aims to explore the cultural and religious traits inherent to the ancient legacy of the Silk Road. “China’s Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road [B&R], announced in 2013, has clearly become a major focus for the country’s efforts to sustain and further develop cooperative relationships with its neighbors near and far, and to work out mutually beneficial policies of economic development for Asia, Europe, and Africa,” MRI says in its website.

The Macau Ricci Institute visited the Macau Museum of Art
A group of seven from the Macau Ricci Institute visited the Macau Museum of Art at 3 pm on the 12th of this month to introduce the research work being carried out by the Institute. The two sides also exchanged views on the long-term cooperative relationship between the Institute and the Macau Museum of Art.
Fr. Stephan Rothlin, director of the Macau Ricci Institute, was warmly received by Dr. Chan Kai Chon, director of the Macau Museum of Art and Fr. Rothlin thanked the Macau Museum of Art for its long-term support. Director Dr. Chan introduced “Beyond the Scenery: Exhibition Commemorating the 300th Anniversary of the Passing of Wu Li”, which will be opened in September and invited the Institute to co-organize a special forum on Wu Li. In addition, Fr. Rothlin also introduced to Dr. Chan the two famous scholars of the Italian painter Giuseppe Castiglione, Prof. Francesco Vossilla and Prof. Alessandro Andreini, to explore the possibility of holding a painting and calligraphy exhibition of Giuseppe Castiglione in the future. Dr. Chan said that Giuseppe Castiglione came to China as a missionary during the Qing Dynasty and later became a royal painter. He not only left a lot of precious paintings for later generations, but also contributed to a certain degree of cultural exchange between China and the West. The exhibition can help the people of Macau to understand the story of Giuseppe Castiglione.
Dr. Chan also praised the research work and contribution of the Macau Ricci Institute for promoting cultural exchanges between China and the West. Also attending the visit were Vice-director Fr. Jarosław Duraj, administrator Ms. Anna Cheang and Project Manager Mr. Allen Lao.
The visit of Prof. Dr. Shunro Kaneda from the Fukuoka Jo Gakuin Nursing University, Japan
Fr. Stephan Rothlin S.J. and Dr. Liu Jingjing were honored and pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Sunro Kaneda who visited the Macau Ricci Institute as he conducts research on various Jesuit missionaries who served also as surgeons at the Court in Beijing as well as in Japan.
Fr. Stephan Rothlin S.J. introduced Prof. Kaneda to scholars who are willing to help him in his research and Dr. Liu Jingjing accompanied him to various libraries and sites in Macau.
Macau Ricci Institute visited the Macau Foundation
On April 13, 2018 at 11:00a.m., the Macau Ricci Institute visited the Macau Foundation, to introduce the Institute's current projects; both parties also exchanged opinions on how to effectively promote society's harmonious and sustainable development.
Fr. Stephan Rothlin, the director of the Macau Ricci Institute, was warmly received by Dr. Wu Zhiliang, President of the Board of Directors of the Macau Foundation, as well as Ms. Isabel Cheang Mio Si, Chefe da Divisão de Cooperação.
Fr. Rothlin expressed his gratitude to the Macau Foundation for its long-term support and introduced to President Wu Zhiliang the current plans to carry out research projects and to rebuild the Library. President Wu Zhiliang appreciated the research work of the Macau Ricci Institute of its effort in the promotion of cultural exchanges between China and the West and expressed support for it.
Also attending the visit were the Vice-Director of the Macau Ricci Institute, Fr. Jaroslaw Duraj and the administrator, Ms. Anna Cheang.
Ricci Institute discusses the role of education as a path to the "common good".
The Seminary of St. Joseph will host, on Thursday and Friday, a seminar organized by the Matteo Ricci Institute of Macao. Under the theme "Education for the common good," the 27 speakers will debate topics such as access to education, economic models and issues such as corporate philanthropy. The event is open to the general public.
